From the anomality of the psychological-qua-psychological to the physicality of the psychological-qua-causal was but two short steps. However it moved the subject on to new ground. Logical behaviorism and mind-body dualism having been set aside long ago, the chief building blocks of the new philosophy of mind are physicalism and causalism. The first is to be understood as the claim that every substance is a physical substance; the second as the thesis that the mind is a many-part operating system in which psychological items stand in relations of efficient causation to inputs from the environment, to one another and to behavioral outputs.
