When the craftsman is said to derive his tools from 'nature', it stands for certain physical phenomena. But when the statesman is recommended to take the standards by which he will judge what is just and good and expedient from 'nature herself and the truth', 'nature' here does not stand for any data of experience, but rather for an abstract ideal, and the statesman's experience of actual laws or existing constitutions is explicitly excluded. Secondly the 'standards' mentioned in this fragment must evidently be distinguished from those referred to elsewhere in our evidence for the Protrepticus.

The term in Aristotle that is generally translated 'substance' is ouCTfcc, literally 'being'. But he also uses some strange circumlocutions, particularly T6 T! fjv ETVOCI or 'the what it is to be a thing*. ' But what is the problem that Aristotle uses these terms to deal with? Indeed is there, one might ask, a recognisable problem here at all? Certainly Aristotle believed so. In fact, the central problem, as he understood it, is one whose origins can be traced in much earlier philosophy. The original and primary sense of ouoicc in Greek is property or wealdi: the English 'substance' is used in an equivalent sense in such phrases as 'a man of substance'.
