Trained horses should be started in the daily work at the rising trot (after walking on loose reins) in order to get them feeling loose and supple as soon as possible. The rider rises to the trot only in the working trot and medium trot. In general, when trotting during a hack, the rising trot is appropriate. When the rider is stiff and the horse is not giving enough with his back, it is better to use rising trot to make it more inviting for the horse. In the rising trot the rider does not sit every stride, but rather stays up out of the saddle, supporting himself on the knees, inner calves, and stirrups for one stride before gliding back into the saddle with the next stride.
