3 SHERPA/RoMEO A significant challenge in determining what articles may legally be deposited in an institutional repository is identifying the publisher’s policy on self-archiving. While it is always best to examine the actual contract signed by the author, it is also helpful to review the publisher’s standard policy and publication agreement. The University of Nottingham’s SHERPA (Securing a Hybrid Environment for Research Preservation and Access) initiative hosts a directory, RoMEO, for precisely this purpose: ‘‘RoMEO is a searchable database of publisher’s policies regarding the self-archiving of journal articles on the web and in Open Access repositories’’ (description from SHERPA/ RoMEO FAQ).
